L4 Google SWE here, joined in the fall of 2017 with TC a smidge over $400k (PM me for breakdown if you care). I've got 6+yrs of experience but I haven't worked on anything groundbreaking; just did well in the interviews and had a good number of competing offers.
I'd love to stay at Google because there's a lot of great problems to tackle here. But I was curious what other companies would offer higher comp for someone with my background (generalist backend engineer). I ask because if I don't get promoted quickly here then I'll hit a massive cliff in year 5. I'd prefer to not optimize for promo but instead optimize for learning here (provided that I can jump to another company with higher comp later on).

Given that you’re already way overpaid for your level, my advice would be to stop obsessing about comp and start focusing on the actual work at least now. Focus on doing what you like and growing as an engineer, not on optimizing for the overpaid status 3 years down the line. Get your priorities straight.
Also if Google wants to pay you 400k at T4, you must be really good. Shouldn’t be too hard to make it to T5 - they wouldn’t pay you that much if they didn’t think you could make T5 soon enough. Find the right team where you can thrive with your skill set and kill it there.
