I really assume that most people who work at FB simply don't care about the impact their company is having on politics throughout the world. At the end of the day there aren't that many companies with comparable pay and benefits, so you bite the bullet and try not to think about it.

  • How is FB creating polarization amongst the people in the US? The polarization comes from the people using the platform and not the platform itself.

"Zeynep Tufekci, the insightful scholar and observer of sociology in the internet era, argued over the weekend that YouTube is unwittingly radicalizing some of its viewers through the videos that it automatically recommends that they watch next.

She was watching Donald Trump rallies while conducting research, sitting through clip after clip, when eventually she noticed “autoplay” videos “that featured white supremacist rants, Holocaust denials and other disturbing content.” Then she watched a bunch of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders videos. Soon, “I was being directed to videos of a leftish conspiratorial cast,” she wrote, “including arguments about the existence of secret government agencies and allegations that the United States government was behind the attacks of Sept. 11.”

And? You only hear what the news purports

It's like saying that it's the bad guys that are the cause of gun violence and a gun by itself never killed anybody.

FB is a toxic platform that brings out the worst in people. I am quite sure one can find correlation between the polarization in US politics and FB growth

Banning Trump won't solve the problem, voting him out is the solution

Exactly. He will only gain more power and play victim if you ban him. A majority of his voter base are attracted to that kind of drama (as he has no actual substance)

Trump is more of a symptom than the cause of a sick society. Voting him out won't fix that. I'm still voting for anybody but Trump though. We need a fucking break.

  • @ad_fontes I completely agree. Facebook and their leaders have made a business decision that makes intellectual sense. If I had a time machine I would love to see how history judges them. The contrast between Mark and Jack is clear.

  • Fact checking is not censorship, we already do it for other entities but make an exception for politicians. It’s purely profit driven, and it’s annoying we’re pretending to fight for free speech when it’s just about the political ads and avoiding legislation.
