Recently I got offer from Shopify as developer from Europe.
I accepted it few days back and will join around July.
TC : 110000Euros + 97500 stocks(3 years)
Shopify CEO sent a mail to management (Full mail here: https://outline.com/Kk8huV )
Some points from mail:
1. Everyone has to show up at least 40% better every year to qualify for our current jobs
2. Shopify, like any other for-profit company, is not a family. The dangers of "family thinking" are that it becomes incredibly hard to let poor performers go. Shopify is a team, not a family.
I am not sure 40% growth every year is possible.
I have some other competitive offers from Amazon and Snowflake but chose Shopify mainly because of culture and better work life balance to spend more time with my family.
I am feeling surprised and this mail was sent the day I rejected my offer from other companies.
My concerns/questions are,
Is this something I should be worried about?
Will Shopify change completely in upcoming days in terms of culture?

Disgusting from Shopify
comments
That email looks atleast 6+ months old...
Clearly seems like there is an exterior motive to bring it up now.. also this is not the first incident and I have seen several other leaks made to take a dig Shopify recently, may be there is ploy to tarnish the image.
I joined after that email was sent and I love working with my team mates and have excellent wlb. I get paid decent for Canada and work seems fun.
You will be fine, if you like projects team is working on and think pay is enough you should join unless you have better offer.
Also, same CEO announced 4 day week for July and August for the entire company, I don't see any thread about this anywhere ?
40% number is meant to indicate overall improvement not just skills. Like you learn french and that seems like improvement from last year. Learn a new coding framework etc...
So much negativity.. those guys should get over it, they ain't even working at Shopify and seem to give advice..
the goal isn’t to be the most productive, the goal is to be sustainably productive. i think shopify leadership understands that, and is why R&R days exist this year
The math just doesn’t add up to me. 40% growth every year adds up exponentially over time. In less than a decade you can become super human if you keep that growth pace.
Frankly I see nothing of concern. CEO is reminding tuff times ahead coz guess what world economy ain’t the best. Gently reminding PIP will b there if you don’t perform well year after year.
Timing of email coincides with your date of offer accepted- yea that’s random.
2 options- take it or leave it.
IMO ceo is progressive thinker and I would take up on his offer. Running a business isn’t a small thing.
