Considering if it's worth to switch to SWE after so much investment into the field already, having spent 5 years in school, and 5 years work.
Debating whether it may be better transition to go management route or Product Management if I was really looking to grow my TC.

Dude, what kind of Mech Engineer are you? With a bachelor’s in Mech with 5 YOE, I’ve never seen any Mech Engineer make that much. Did you just round up your actual TC from 101k to 200k?

Average Bay Area Entry Level Mech Engineers make 65-85k, then with 5YOE in very technical mech engineering field, maybe it would be possible to be closer to TC 200k, but still that’s about a Director Mech Engineer’s TC in most of the Mech Design Companies

200k mech is totally doable in the bay at EV companies. It's mostly growth RSU though, so don't miss the bump

  • Make sure you like coding and are not just switching for TC. Being a SWE is hard because you constantly have to keep learning and upskilling even in your feee time. If you want to get into the field something easy will be RPA. Basically drag and drop and they get paid well too.

I was thinking the same. I am not sure if I'll be able to break even on what I could be becoming continuing in the field and progressing onto management role, in a industry I have experience on vs. totally new field

I did a similar switch and am happy with it. FWIW I was a lot more invested on mechanical engineering and it was still worth it

I would say TC potential..., but these are just late-night self thoughts, without really considering if I'll like doing it or be good at it.
