My M2 definitely works more than 8 hours. I would guess about 10 a day. My M1 maybe 9 hours? Definitely more busy than the ICs on the team - but not absurd and definitely in line with the pay they get.
Most of the time during the day is spent in meetings, responding to slack/emails, fire fighting and providing/tracking updates up and down the chain. Remaining time in the night is spent in writing docs, creating reports and catching up on actual work
This could just be first year TC for new L5. Also, I am in 30s . So while money is important it is not the only motivation. I donβt feel bad about younger folks making more than me. I am just competing with myself, not them.

Why would ICs ever switch to management track just to have more stress, work longer hours, and be paid less
