As a PM working in a specialized area is it better to change companies to a pm role or an engineering role?

I assume even if I have a strong history of work as an engineer being most recently a pm I'd have to work my way back up, and as a PM whose expertise is in specialized project domains id have a limited set of options for pm roles in other companies.

Half of me wonders if I should just bite the bullet and go work on some startup ideas I have. I don't think I'd have issue building my product or getting a round of funding but unsure if I want to dive into a multi year commitment like a startup just yet especially with all the scaling challenges involved.

If you think it's gonna be easy to build your product and get funding you should probably try it.
That will teach the valuable lesson that making a profitable business that can sustain a compensation such as your current one is pretty much impossible (big news you're working for an outlier that makes tremendous amounts of money; it's not reproducible).
Or you'll find out you were right and you'll make money which is a valuable lesson as well.

Ha I agree I don't really care about my current comp and realize getting it from a startup is unrealistic completely. Hence my comment on the multiyear commitment to grow it and make it successful until cash runs out
