OCI or Amazon for new grad

Nov 11, 2021 13 Comments

Have offer from OCI and have final for Amazon next week. This is for new grad so I won’t know my team at Amazon until I get an offer and accept.

OCI Offer Breakdown:
Location: Seattle
Base - 120k
Sign on and relocation - 30k
Stock - 54k (216k / 4 years at current stock price)
TC Y1 - 204k

Amazon Offer Breakdown:
Location: Seattle
Base - 120k
Sign on - 37k year 1, 23k year 2
Stock - 88k (5/15/40/40)
TC Y1 - 162k
Notes: Recruiter said that offer is standard and non-negotiable

From what I’ve heard, Amazon doesn’t do negotiations unless you have F or G so their offer might not beat Oracle's. Assuming I pass finals for Amazon, should I take them instead? Is it worth to take pay cut to have FAANG on resume? I have heard mixed reviews for both companies so far.

Thanks!

EDITS: Added Amazon's compensation offer after onsite (3 rounds) and clarified Y1 total comp for both companies

Absolutely OCI. Avoid Amazon like the plague, I used to work in AWS and OCI is so much better for tc and wlb

I got a fresh grad in my team last year. She is doing really good. No idea about her lc count but she is a damn good engineer.

I just told her manager the other day. Promote her to ic3. She deserves it. And she is being promoted within less than a year. Not because I pushed but her manager felt it too.

    Hello more tc.

Don’t know much about Oracle, but I lucked out with negotiating my new grad offer to top of band. Your offer is going to be as good as it gets with $175k recurring, which is what I get though you get about 20k more cash first year.

It seems like oracle is low rated just like Amazon. I’d just take Oracle but maybe try to use an Amazon offer to swipe a couple grand here or there.

    • Hey awesome to hear you were able to negotiate your amzn offer. Did u happen to have other FAANG offers or were they just flexible with what u wanted?

I had interview loops for FAANG but I had another offer at a company that normally paid $120k that really liked me and gave me a promo plus a major hike so it was really competitive in the end with amazing wlb, so I had a strong competing offer though they never asked too much about the other offer or demand proof

I would go to Amazon. OCI isn’t really a good place to learn as a new grad because they give the new folks lots of operational and deployment tasks. OCI is very shortsighted and trades good engineering practices for speed (like they had new engineers in a 14-hour a day 7day a week on call rotation for building out data centers). For this reason, you won’t really learn anything except how to read a log and push the next fix out.

At least at Amazon you can learn for a year and get the first signing bonus, then start looking if you hate it. You’ll likely have more options and a better story for the interviews at Amazon.

Finally, Amazon will offer you more mobility internally. It is so large and there is no minimum required time to stay on a team, so if you want to switch real quick you can.

    Good luck to you.

    • how frequent in OCI are these 14x7 work days? that seems very brutal for a fresh grad. do they have similar practices at Amazon? I guess for non AWS teams they probably have better wlb
