Evaluate my offer: Senior UX Designer @ T-Mobile

Aug 5, 2021 13 Comments

Currently a contractor at T-Mobile at 150 base, nothing else.

Now have an offer in-hand for FTE:
Base: 130
Bonus: 19.5 (15%)
RSUs: 10 (3 year vest)
So, TC is like* ~$150

Lower than I expected … what's everyone else seeing?

*Saying "like" because I have no idea how reliable bonuses are

The bonus has been over 15% since I started.

An engineer won’t inherently have a higher bonus. That’s largely dictated by HR via salary bands and level, not business function.

    • Good to know about the bonuses. I've never had a role explicitly call out bonus as part of the comp package, so was unsure how confident I should be in this.

Also: a bonus feels wildly dependent on lots of factors outside an individual's control.

  • The bonus has been reliable for me the past 3 years I’ve worked there. I’ve gotten at least the full targeted amount if not sure for high preforming years.

  • Update: I counter-offered with a TC ~200/yr*, they upped the base by 5 (to 135), but that was it, so I declined. May have over-extended a bit.

    * What I countered with:
    base - 165
    bonus - 19.8 (12%)
    grant - 20k yearly
    starting bonus - 20k

I positioned the counter based on the expected impact + ROI over 3 years (plus market realities, past comp, and partnering role comp). While this seems like a reasonable way to frame the value, maybe a little hard when salaried roles are viewed closer to commodities.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

Push for more comp. Seems low. Rest is standard and non-negotiable

    • Thanks for the input. Before I saw this, I pushed for more of everything, which may have kneecapped things.
