Hello, I'm working as a web developer for a public school system. I have 7 years of experience working for non profits and school districts. My tech stack includes html, js, css, jquery, php, mysql, rest, wordpress plugin development. I know OO Java and am a newbie one python. I'm happy for now but I don't see any opportunities to growth in this company. I want to go to market but don't feel ready and feel like never gonna be ready. I do leetcode, hackerrank and daily interview questions, they look so hard and I'm having hard time even understanding them. But I do my job with high quality, my work is satisfactory. I mostly do internal apps so I can't create a portfolio. What should I do? Should I learn a new language that's popular now? I enjoy working on the back end than front. Thank you.

You probably have the experience of someone in enterprise with about 3y of big system experience.

Get yourself out of the minor leagues and get into large systems. Shoot for Sr. Web Apps dev/swe.

2-3y as Sr. Move to Lead.

    Good luck.

I agree ..younger ppl with big systems experience are more valuable nowadays..their resume looks a lot like the job description and they have done good projects at work..

Small sys experience is very limited value, for sure. OP needs to get out of that hole ASAP

  • Just interview to get a feel for the market and interview questions. Interviewing in itself is an underrated skill that you can't really LC for

Thank you so much for the advices. What are the ways to improve myself on solving the interview questions other than taking interviews? How can I become confident with complex algorithm questions? Is it possible by taking online courses? Because in my point of view that's the only thing that stands between me and my dream job on a large scale company.
