I have accepted the DE L5 offer from Amazon this Summer. I haven’t been happy with the TC but I was optimistic because of COVID and I thought I would learn and grow fast.
Being a few months here, I am learning:
1) How to adjust myself for tech-debt and find workarounds instead of fixing them.
2) DEs shouldn’t fix code. They just open tickets. This makes the grow and impact really challenging. Report any issues and it goes to backlog for next quarters.
3) Being on-call: Fix someone’s ETL and investigate missing data in a sloppy giant SQL and their excuse always is: “oops. It was done in rush.”
4) The compensation is apparently $30-40k from SDE. Frontend or backend. My manager denies and this is really turn off.
Question from Amazon people: What should I do?
- Switch to SDE? What is the path? Does the TC change?
- Try to get promoted to L6? I heard the TC is the same as L5 SDE. If that’s true, does it worth it?
- Find another job at the other companies as soon as year 1?
TC: $193K YoE:5

Is there an exception?
does fixing them brings your manager to his next level?
