Is There a Way to Talk the Company out of Non-competition and Non-solicitation Agreement?

I accepted an offer from Microsoft. Now they are trying to make me sign a "Non-Competition and Non-Solicitation" agreement which says I cannot work on anything competitive for a period of one (1) year after my employment with Microsoft ends.

Is this done in other companies too? I find it unfair and ridiculous in this competitive industry and almost opens up the gate for your employer to make you a slave, because you can't find a job in any other big tech companies.

How can I get myself out of this without signing the agreement? Or is this normal and everyone signs it?

Well they can, but they have to pay for "lost opportunity cost" which is by definition greater than your pay. Generally 2x your last year's pay for that year of non compete.

You can still work for other companies just not for a competitor in that space while they are paying you.

Echoing that it is normal, and you can’t get out of it. Everyone signs it and they don’t enforce it unless you are an executive.
