there are just endless banana references at amazon for whatever reason.
- we have banana stands (the people who work there are called banistas), where you can get free bananas - onboarding videos when you first get hired strangely have so many banana references
Rumor has it that during the early days of Amazon, Jeff Bezos restricted his diet to consist of only bananas. He claims it brought him a heightened awareness and helped him guide Amazon through the dot com bubble burst
The free banana thing is kind of a scam. They only had one stand in SLU pre covid, and one by Doppler (up in downtown seattle by the strip club). So depending on where your building was and your traveling path, youβd likely end up having to go out of your way to get the bananas. For me it would add an extra 5-7 min to my morning commute, which definitely was not worth it. It was such a hassle that I just bought my own bananas at home to bring one to work each morning. So even though we get free bananas, itβs not like theyβre just sitting in the kitchen for you to grab.
No. Iβm entirely serious. Iβd venture to say the vast majority of Amazon employees donβt even get the free bananas. Nobody in my team seemed to get them since they all drove in to work and sure as hell werenβt gonna park and walk three blocks then backtrack for a damn banana. I only got them because I took the bus so it was slightly less inconvenient but even that got old after a few weeks so I stopped entirely.
