Toxic culture at JPMC

Hi Everyone, i intend to start this thread to help people know about toxic culture in certain departments of JPMC. I worked in CFS(Custody and fund services) for two years with At joining i was given 10 percent raise but with a big portion of comp being the year end bonus. And my nightmare started soon after I joined JPM. I was put under a person who has no clue about managing high skilled resources. He managed people with the philosophy of control than empowerment and often misbehaved with his reports. My complaints were ignored and when later other people complained about it they acknowledged about his behavior but without any action. Instead he was promoted in the form of number of people reporting to him so basically he was rewarded for promoting the culture of subordination. I continued my complains and i was transferred to different team with in the group and then they played it such a way that it was made to believe that I cannot work in teams and i was not given any bonus during my second calendar year. I reached out to all levels including Jamie to complain about this with the mention of proofs culture of favoritism but no action was taken. Finally i had to resign from the firm.

Actual experience is much worse than the words above can describe. Wanted to know if other people had similar experience while working at JPM which might help other people while they make their choice to join JPM at least certain departments. Btw i did hear similar horror stories from many other people working in CFS technology

Sorry to hear you had to go through this. Remember, HR is generally there to protect the company and not the employees. I hope you found a better role.

  • Another thing which I want to mention about the the CFS technology management team is that they all come from same place and if you are not related to them through some chain you go through some pretty rough experience. Again this statement is based on feedback from many people I interacted with during my tenure with JPMC

    • Flagged by the community.

    • Yeah. It’s not racist if you are being consistent. Some people think that team full of Indians or chinese is bad but have no problems with team full of white people.

  • I joined 7 months ago working on a creative team. Very toxic culture. I am never saw so much nepotism where most are at best inept.

    • Tell me more about the Amex culture please. I see people who are good at talking up, taking credit for others work and also moving every 18 months! Is that a thing? It just seems like people are looking for their next job without focusing on their role all the time. Hard to get anything done with this tribe.

  • From my overall experience i learnt, that it is difficult to fight the battle with senior mgmt and it maybe better if we focus our energy on switching to another company. With that u would be able to move quickly, get more salary, potentially a good team and nothing to lose. I stopped running after promotion. Most of us cannot play the politics and hence its better we keep switching every 2 to 3 years. Life isn't only money. Its about finding happiness in what you do personally and professionally. Let these horror stories continue, carve ur own path.

Agreed with you guys. Most of the time you cannot fight with incompetent people on top. That’s something you can not change. I tried that many times. In the past I would argue, but then overtime I just checked out. Sometimes it’s good if you can negotiate a good severance package so you can focus on looking for another job. It is hard to spend the entire day in a frustrating environment and still be able to focus after.

Indeed. Even peers be sometimes are a bunch of ____ .. currently working with a guy who made changes all across the app, later in the meeting said, why is this happening (pointing his fingers at me) ... I found out it was his code mistake. As a good guy I fixed it. Today same shit happened again, I pointed out to him that it was working fine previously. He just said do this or that meaning you clean my shit too. I'm frustrated by such people and I know that my boss won't do shit about it. And I would love to learn how do you guys deal with such people. Yesterday I started preparing either way and I'll keep on doing little by little until I get out of this fucked up situation.

One of the micromanagers got promoted in CCB. There are plenty of such bad micromanagers in JPMC. Infact the shittier person you are the easier you become a manager here. Hardly a few instances where it isn't the case but that too are those people who are joining from different companies
