What are your thoughts on Google Brain vs Facebook AI research vs other labs (Amazon, Baidu, Apple, IBM) for deep learning research?

I’m curious about comp, culture, openness, work life balance, research quality, infrastructure, etc

At FB unless you’re an expert you won’t get stellar comp at FAIR. Product teams are the only places for generalists to advance quickly. However if you’re excited about ML research and prefer working in that field at the cost of growth and comp, then it’s a different story. The pay is still great though.

By “stellar comp” do you mean relative to other FB groups? Also, what do you think “expert level” entails at FAIR? (Senior RS, junior RS, SWE, etc)? Thanks!

      1. Stellar means enough to not worry about comp and focus on other needs (like recognition or work enjoyment), north of $500k per year.

      2. Expert doesn’t relate to title. It means you are an authority in one niche area (either due to exceptional academic pursuit- novel seminal papers in top conferences, or due to past work experience- say you built critical pieces of an ML system at Google and can guide and setup similar system that is needed and doesn’t exist here, with a team)

I’m an SDE at amazon working with this “research” team on some ML projects. In my opinion, you have to be very good at ML to advance in your career. Writing good software is the easiest part, analyzing shit takes 90% of your time.

Do you have offer from all? In case not, I will just die to work in any of them.
