I work for a small startup making TC 36-50k

I got a message from an Amazon recruiter for a job in ads.

I hear a lot of bad things from blind about Amazon culture with pip etc...

Is it even worth pursuing a job at Amazon, or should I keep my current job which is very laid back, and wait for a better company?

  • I talk a lot of shit on Amazon because I worked there and it’s a hellhole BUT it looks fantastic on your resume. It all depends on where you are in life.

If you’re single and understand that it’s a temporary thing that is going to put you through a grinder then you should absolutely put in your time there. It will pay dividends in the end.

If you’re a mid career person with a family and a life then stay away, Amazon will destroy you and your family.

You know the Blind shitposting has gone overboard when a guy making 36k thinks Amazon will ruin his career. I sometimes join the trash talking for fun, but in reality Amazon's a great starting point for your career and will open tons of doors (even if you get pipped 😉).

  • Despite all of the horror stories on Blind, many people do have good experiences at Amazon. Not saying bad shit doesn’t happen there, so let’s say you get on a horrible team. I think you can easily last a year at a minimum. If you do that, you’ll get a substantial raise, it’ll look great on your resume, and you’ll be able to move onto more attractive roles more easily.

I’d say go for it. It can be a great stepping stone for your career.

Thanks, I like the optimism. I think this is pretty much what I was thinking might be the case/hoping to hear.

Amazon pays *way* more than you make, even to complete new grads. Working at Amazon will basically create a new lower bound on your TC for the rest of your life: When you interview with new companies while at Amazon, they will have to offer pay better than Amazon to attract you. Etc when you move on from those companies.

Basically 6 figures forever if you can get there

I agree. Amazon is like the level 0 for high paying/big tech companies. You wanna start there but don't wanna come back. Ever.
