Despite what your friends say, kayak is still really good. Don't worry about what your friends say. Kayak even combines different airlines for onward and return flights to give you the best overall price. Between Google flights and Kayak you have it covered.

Like some others have mentioned, skiplagged goes one step further. This will work only if you don't check in bags. When flying from city A to city B, sometimes it's cheaper to purchase a ticket to city C with a stopover in B and not take the connection from B to C. You may not always find this option.

Scott's cheap flights had a little guide that he used to sell for a dollar on the basics of getting cheap flights. I'd recommend reading it.
