NY newbie here. What neighborhoods are within walking distance (not more than 30 mins ideally) or one bus/train ride away from SoHo? Rent not more than $1500-2k with or without roommate. What website(s) should I be looking into?

    $1500 to $2k is not a realistic price range for the other features like location. A 400 square foot studio in or within 30 minutes walk of Soho will cost you at least $2500 for a junk place that hasn't been maintained since the 1970s, or $3000+ for a modern well maintained place. This is including rent reductions due to covid flight. Your best bet is to either keep your location and budget but get a roommate, or nearly double your budget without a roommate. Anyplace outside Manhattan will be a lot cheaper, but even if it's only a 30 minute train ride, the social groups are different and people will avoid interaction with "long distance" friend groups as silly as it seems.

    Check Jersey. You can easily get a whole 1 bedroom by yourself for 2k right at the PATH train which will take you to world trade center in 9 minutes or Christopher Street in 6-7 minutes and you can walk to Soho from there.

      PATH is inconvenient on the weekends YES. Every other time it's worth the savings and you can Uber everywhere. All weekdays PATH is cleaner, faster, and more frequent. New definitely has lived in NYC their whole life and I understand that viewpoint too, although it's biased AF.
      You can use that money you save to go to your friends places and Uber back.

      Also in 2k you'll get Luxury 1bed rental in Jersey city or Newport. Concierge, swimming pool gym.. etc.

    Alphabet City, LES or Williamsburg. Your budget is not reasonable for even a studio though. So you might need to go deeper into BK or just get roommates.
