My company has a huge conflict-avoidant stance when it comes to medical providers receiving payments for speaking engagements from big pharma. It wouldn’t be so bad but some of them make greater than $150,000 a year doing this and then they turn around and prescribe those same drugs in the hospital. There’s a huge community harm being done especially as it relates to infectious diseases meds as we are increasing resistance rates through inappropriate use. What are your institutions doing about this problem?
Compensation for speaking engagements and health care practitioner interactions are heavily regulated for pharmaceutical companies and are subject to public disclosure. If there are specific drugs or manufacturers that you believe are abusing this or unduly influencing prescriber behavior, I’d suggest you report those instances. Generalized, blanket statements aren’t very helpful.
Seriously though, this ^^ we have the sunshine act now
Great informed reply
Yes, and we pull the payments from the CMS open payments websites and share with corporate compliance. The pharmaceutical companies are not breaking regulation and providers are not doing anything illegal. I guess my question really centers around what executive leadership strategies are recommended? What if the problem is a leadership courage crisis. Frankly, it’s bad for patient care and embarrassing that the company allows it to happen.
In sorry what exactly does your company do to mitigate this problem?
Probably making it worse lol.
Isn’t that your job?
Yeah and it sucks. All I can do now is leetcode to leave.
Nope!
