how was your TC progress over the years (please don't count stock appreciation) do you feel that your phd helped you in getting faster promotions? edit: will be helpful if you mention your subject and school tier..
Big mistake.
Idek why a computer science major would pursue a PhD. Yes there are roles that specifically require it but when you consider the time and money spent to finally get it, I can’t really see how it’s worth it unless you’re just bored and wealthy.
But you are assuming TC is the priority. That's not the case for everyone. Goal of academia is generating knowledge, not making profit. Also I am assuming by money spent, you mean the opportunity cost? Because no promising PHd student will be spending money on PhD, they mostly get scholarships and stipends.
Not at all.
I think having a masters is much more helpful to land your first job. But then it seems that no one cares
Why? Most masters don’t seem to teach much.
MS only helpful if your undergrad career fairs suck and you want a bigger one
PhD here. A scholarship paid my masters and PhD, and got a humble salary those days that covered nice traveling and partying throughout all my 20s. I assure you those were to date the best days of my life if I compare it to if I had to live in South Bay and been working on climbing up the ICT ladder. Now, I do my best, and I might be a bit behind compared to people who just submerged in to ICT work when they were 22 and worked their asses of, and I never look back thinking should’ve could’ve would’ve. I did it, and I’m still on time to catch all those breathers.
Plus, people call you doctor
glad you had good time at least
My rough TC progression PhD grad ~20k Postdoc ~60k 2 yoe ~80k 5 yoe ~110k All non USA, converted to USD. Was it worth it? Fuck no. Not only I lived 6 years on a poverty level wage, but I'm also at least one level below where I would be. For companies I got 5 yoe instead of 10+. It's painful to see people several years younger as my seniors because the didn't waste half of their professional live. Also I made shit comp earliest in my career, when income is most critical due to compounding. Now if you excuse me I'll go to one corner to cry.
where are you? in Canada or Europe? your phd didn't give you any edge over others i guess the topic wasn't relevant... ;( this kind of problem is haunting me, why i did do it?
Quite the contrary, I work exactly on the same field as my dissertation. Thing is, outside research nobody gives half a shit. 5 yoe actually building systems >>> PhD
If research isn’t one’s top priority I don’t see why one would ever get a STEM PhD.
it WAS my priority, things shifted since then
Phd in CS (ML focus)... Tier 3 univ in US As grad student, without summer internship, TC 17k-19k. With summer internship, it was 50k - 70k. 1st Job after grad school: 165k TC 2nd Job: 220k TC
