How possible is it for me to get upleveled to staff SWE when applying to a senior SWE position? I currently have 5 YOE.

I heard this is very rare. Considering canceling my interview if so because I got L5 elsewhere #engineering

  • It is possible if you are from tier 1 company, otherwise it is very hard.

      Ok thanks guys. I will cancel my interview then. I'm really only interested in staff (was put in senior loop)

    • OP, I personally know a person who was interviewed for senior but was asked if he wanted to try staff role (possibly additional interviews) during the post-interview discussion with the recruiter. That was based on the interview feedback.

  • Why don’t you ask to interview for staff instead? Up level is next to impossible if you didn’t come from FAANG and got strong hire in multiple rounds. Switching to staff loop is better.

    Interviews are different so you need to ask for staff upfront. You will not be upleveled just because you did well in senior interview . Now this is very unlikely with 5 years unless you are amazing
