1) Too many people on teams and when something is popular, resources are thrown at it having a negative effect

2) Unable to focus on small scopes and small sets of features

3) Forced to focus on scale vs fit from the start

4) Lack of quick decision making and central focus

    WTF??
How come Instagram's innovative? What's wrong with you people? Google's building AI for the great good. It doesn't mess with that social crap some morons would use. Unless it's just needed to make some money to throw it into AI research.

  • Is this why Google has 5 different messaging apps?

How come? I don't see how gTalk and Spaces lie into that category. You can chat in Instagram too, but it's not a messaging app because of that. Messenger for Android will be substituted with Allo.

That's said, we have two apps: Allo and Hangouts for two different markets.

  • Read innovators dilemma. Good book, and gives good explanation why companies fail to innovate

    • I have seen it everywhere, big companies start a new service trying to cover all fronts and ship to half the world in a few months, obviously scenarios are not nailed and the whole thing is half baked, while startups nail scenarios and start small, expanding while people beg to be able to access the service... Then they are bought.

  • I think that's the whole point of Google X. Create startup like environments within Google.

I heard of that - but does that mean you incubate with googles resources and time and then sell it to google ? Remember Cisco had a similar thing - their famous trio who make companies and Cisco buys it. Not sure why Google thinks what it does is "always" innovative. Btw I did work at google - and i know there are + and - of every company, big or small.

Also what I meant was that area 120 kind of things are like living in a luxurious home inside a palace. Innovation comes from having a killer attitude and spirit and that you won't find it in the comforts of google - innovation comes from pain, innovation comes from necessity, innovation comes from commitment to customers. Do area 120 , once a product is ready to launch , bolt to another one because most of whom I know don't want to maintain or release or fix things, they just want to innovate - this will not take things far - innovation requires commitment and 100% commitment.

They developed the most successful mobile platform in the world in less than a decade, I guess they can't innovate. Let's lump them in with the creators of Microsoft Kin.

I said developed, not created. You do know MS-DOS wasn't created by Microsoft? So we're not going to credit Microsoft for Windows then? Same thing. If you take something and you develop it into something great as to become the market leader, damn right the credit belongs to you.
