Are USA MS CS students with CS undergrad looked down on as only doing masters because they could not find a job?

I am talking about American MS CS students who did CS undergrad, then do masters.

People may think that the only reason they are doing masters is because they could not get and keep a job after doing CS undergrad. For that reason undergrad students and international masters students are preferred.

These are things I have read and heard, how true is this? I think its especially relevant now as CS undergrads in this rough job market may just continue their education and go for an MS. But are they going to be looked at unfavorably?

Never met anyone that looks down on grad students for studying, only for acting like know it all's sometimes. Blind dislikes MSCS for being suboptimal for TC, but it stops at that

What do you mean by MSCS is suboptimal for TC? Kinda confused. Does Blind prefer PhD over MS?

Blind prefers no MS because of industry experience opportunity cost. MS comes with tuition, no income, barely higher starting pay, and the degree. It's a net negative vs having spent the two more years working in tech. Same goes for PhD. Grad school is for learning, not for optimizing income.

      OP
Haha i knew this comment was coming and thought to change my username but I did not bother.

I guess the concerns I stated in the OP are not true then? I am asking because I know people in this position that are considering going for masters after doing CS undergrad. I hope they will not be discriminated against for only doing MS because they could not get a job after undergrad

  • I was an international MSCS in a middle tier school. I noticed masters students were almost all internationals. But there were also few Americans that were doing Masters coz they had scholarship or some other incentive to do it.
The reason remains, native talent supply for STEM is very less but demand is high. Citizens don't need to go for higher ed to get a good job Unless incentived. Higher ed is the gateway for internationals to enter the job market. Everyone is happy.

Having said that, I guess if you move to higher tier ivy schools etc, you may see more Americans going for MSCS.

Because the masters programs are BS, I’ve looked at the curriculum and the majority of them are equivalent to what you learned in undergrad. Unless you’re doing research or advanced topics, no reason to really do a masters
