I got a senior PM job offer with an option to choose from either of these 3 locations Portland , oregon : TC 200 SFO : TC 230 Denver: TC 200 Current TC : 180 ( bay area ) Which of these places would the best choice from a COL and weather perspective.
From col Bay area is expensive. Even the 30k is not great. But from career perspective SFO is way high. Denver is a amazing City to live, lots of outdoor and decent tech. Portland rainy cloudy and will be my third choice. ( I live in Seattle by the way)
Isn’t the weather in Denver harsher than Portland?
It is colder and snowier, but Portland is much more grey and rainy. Depends on what you can tolerate
Portland will be cheapest. I think the best quality of life will be in Denver though. SFO would be my last choice and the higher TC won’t make up for the higher cost of living.
Why do you think Denver has better QOL than Portland ?
300 days of sunshine, tons of opportunities for mountain sports, lots of suburbs with more affordable homes (though living in the city center will be quite expensive). Portland is fine but very yuppy, and the PNW in general has very depressing weather with non stop overcast/rain from September through April. Go visit both cities and see for yourself. Only you can decide...
Denver is nicer than portland.
Why so?
Mountains. Less hippies. Snow sports.
Portland. It’s very affordable and a great place to live. Denver is kind of nice but mostly only good if you like to ski or snowboard. Your money might stretch further there too.
The one reason to pick SF (besides the weather, once you get out of foggy San Francisco proper) is the critical mass of other jobs here. In tech, once you're in the Bay Area you have mobility and access to other employers like nowhere else in the (at least English speaking) world. COL and commutes suck. COL if you want a short commute goes even farther beyond sucking
I don’t plan to change job every year. Hopefully if everything goes well, I plan to stick around with new employer for few years
Sure. OTOH, sometimes employers have other plans for you, or the employers change. It's a degree of flexibility and quasi security that you don't get at a smaller hub like Seattle or Austin
COL: Denver Career opportunities: SFO It really depends on what you’re optimizing.
Stay away from SF: expensive, congested, filthy

Are we ready to buy our forever home?
Col is probably best in Portland - and if you live outside city on Washington side you may be able to skirt state taxes. I would not recommend that though unless it works for you. I personally would like Denver better, but I bet I could make a strong case for portland
You won't be able to skip taxes, speaking as someone who has lived in both states
