possible to switch from program manager to product manager at Amazon?
I have a MSc in Computer science. no mba. How hard is it to make the switch? I would only take the offer if i can switch eventually, would like to see if I should bother
It kind of depends on if you’re connected with the team that would bring you on as a product manager. Generally you work in your role, when you wanna rotate you meet with hiring managers to discuss their open roles, apply to some formally, managers will decide to either extend an offer, do an informal loop, or do a full loop. It can vary widely. That said nothing stops you from rotating anywhere. I know a guy who went from finance manager to SDM, cause he had the skills and passed the loop.
I didn’t leave finance but my last rotation I met with the director who I already knew well (from working cross departmental). Told him I was interested and wanted to apply. He said apply and I’ll send you an offer letter by EOD. No loop at all. I had another team I was interested in. Similar knew the hiring manager well. He put me through a full day formal loop. They have a lot of discretion on internal rotations.
Yes it’s possible. You need to impress a L7 or Director that you partner with and then after a while you can set up coffee with them if they have open positions
Easily. I know numerous people who rotated from finance to PM. You’ll have to be flexible on PM vs PMT unless you feel you can pass a tech loop.
That’s really encouraging info :) do you happen to know/recall how the process is? Do you internally apply/reinterview?
