Went to RISD, dropped out to avoid student loan debt. Moved to SF, took a short course from General Assembly and did contract ui/ux work for a few start ups. One of the contract employers wanted to hire me full time. I was working under their one design director. Company was small but had been operating for 10 years, had a mission I loved, and fully remote which gives me a lot of freedom. 2 months in the design director that hired me left and they asked me to take over. I took the challenge.

I’ve now been working for them for almost 2 full years without a solid design mentor, and the cofounder who I work with directly is a major micro manager (ex: he asks me to change the size and color of headers in prototypes 3x until he thinks it’s just right). I feel like I’m no longer growing in the company but also feel like there’s so much I don’t know about this discipline and want to learn/ need to learn before I move elsewhere.

Bonus is that it’s fully remote and I have a lot of flexibility. Current salary is 120k. I’m now living in Los Angeles if anyone knows of good design mentors or companies with great design culture in this city. Or has general advice on how to proceed in my career with an inflated title and impostor syndrome.

Deflate yourself. No need to put on your resume your inflated title - it is not realistic anyway you weren’t directing a team

I’m directing a team of one (myself) with 2 yrs experience. For a traditional design director yes, for my situation though?

That’s a fair salary considering the work OP is likely doing. In this case, the title doesn’t matter.

I can relate to you completely. Last job I was completely crippled with impostor syndrome. Anyways, with only 2 years of experience don’t expect many potential employers to take the inflated title serious. People are fully cognizant of silly inflated startup titles. That barely passes for a Senior Designer role. 5 years would be moving into manager, 10 years is Director. Your startup was desperate to use someone already in the trenches to cover for the vacant role, so they are taking advantage a little while also being extremely cheap by not hiring a person with the appropriate amount of experience.
Your pay is fine. Stick with it, or leave if you’re unhappy but I would not expect to land a role any higher than Senior designer. Hope this helps.

Yes that is super helpful thank you! Wasn’t expecting any new role to be higher level than senior designer. And good to know that being transparent about all of this would be fine when seeking a new job.

Are there any conventions or online communities like Stackoverflow or others, where you can grow your skillset?

Yes, I have joined a few online communities for designers, thank you for the recommendation. Would love to find an in person mentor (a legit design director who has built a lot of products and made all of the mistakes already) in the LA area
