confused by the titles. In some companies are program managers basically product managers?
PgM purpose is to scale and optimize. PM purpose is to introduce and change products/services. Both work with cross functional teams to achieve those goals.
Do you mind if I pm you with some more questions? I have a program management onsite coming up at FB.
Program mgr is traditionally known as PMO. These teams lead overall program schedules, milestones, and overall program organization. A Product mgr is very different, making product decisions. Are there some companies where Product mgrs do some Program mgmt? sure, especially if PMO org is weak. Can Program mgrs do Product mgmt work? Not a chance.

At msft program managers are the same as product managers where they look at new products or product features, and work cross functionally to deliver. Program managers tend to tie the loose knots and make sure projects are on track or on budget etc.
So does FAANMG have opportunities for Program Managers, or just Product?
FB has tons of PgM roles.
Seems to be common amongst tech companies nowadays.
Program manager is a fancy term for Project Managers. Also in some cases PgM will overlook multiple projects and lead scrum masters. But it’s just ways of hiring more people, to do the same fucking job that others are also doing so that at the end when shit hits the fan, you can have someone to blame. And MS calls it a OgM role coz they are idiots and additionally they never had the concept of PdM but mostly project managers or owners but as the industry evolve, titles too. PdM on the other hand work with dev team and try to improve products, introduce new features, produce rough mockups or work with the designer.
I was thinking of targeting it as a career move. I have 1 year consulting, 3 years QA, and 2 years as Scrum Master. I think Program Manager sounds like a better fit for me vs. product manager.
Yeah makes sense Program manager sounds as a better fit
Not sure which I qualify for. Starting to look around as the title means different things at different companies.
Yes, at Microsoft. There is no set industry standard for what PgM do
