I feel like Software Engineering career is a moving target

Even 10 years into my career I spend my weekends in coffee shops doing sort of supplemental/remedial skilling to stay competitive or at least relevant. That is the God-honest and depressing truth.

Well you can always go be a barista if you don't like continuous learning but chances are you need to up your latte skills there too lol. All competitive fields require keeping up to date. Imagine a lawyer or doctor stuck to the teachings of 1980.

It’s the challenge and the joy. If you don’t like constantly learning new stuff you might want to think about a different field of work.

I am doing this 20 years into my career. This is life in tech.

I have ex colleagues who started in the late 90s at large companies that are in the exact same team even today. This is one year of learning repeated 20 times. They have a cushy life. They work 25-30 hours a week and have fun.

A lot of these people are okay as long as as they have their jobs at the old big tech companies but are screwed in the event of a layoff. Essentially one layoff away from forced retirement.

I am 15+ years as an IC in tech.

While tech evolves rapidly, there is also the business model churn which offshores mature tech to india/china/romania.. etc.. So, if you are in bay-area, you are likely working on R&D and next gen products - which usually involve the latest tech and high ambiguity/uncertainty.

so keep your swords sharp, and remain fighting fit.

I've never done any learning outside of work, and I don't even have a degree in CS. You people are doing it wrong. Get paid to learn
