Bout to start at Snap, so I’m curious what peeps think about him? What type of culture does he instill, and does it actually reflect the culture handbook?

Any insights would be awesome!

This is my first big tech company, worked at start ups prior. One with shit culture, one with absolutely fantastic culture.

TC: $165k, non-tech
YOE: 3.5-4

If Evan is your definition of piece of shit frat boys, you had some really lame frats at your school.

Snap today is boring, corporate, and (unproductively) liberal. It feels a lot like Google but with less money to waste on nonsense that we still waste on nonsense.

No idea about who he is personally, but I really value how open he is and how frequently he communicates with the company. I came over from Amazon and it is night and day. At Amazon, you get to hear from Jeff like…once or twice a year. Evan does frequent (like, a couple times a month) live videos where he speaks to the company, answers pre-submitted questions, etc. It is a nice change.

Now, does his vision for the company match reality? I don’t know. It’s tough because there is this strange dichotomy where we want to value the provacy of users and keep the ephemeral nature of the app, but need to make money from ads. But so far, Snap has been pretty successful, and our most recent earnings showed us earning a profit for the first time. So something somewhere in this company is going well.

Snap is super relaxed compared to AWS. I see posts on here all the time talking about how people are so busy here, but I swear, my team hardly does anything. Idk what they’re on about. People here got rich from the stock so the long tenured folks are just coasting.

It’s not cutthroat at all. It’s a very kind culture and a lot of empathy. There are chill teams, but others that do work incredibly hard (not in a bad way). Org dependent

Hey, how were your interviews at snap? Mostly LC questions?

As for Evan soiegel all I know is that he was one of the youngest billionaires

I’m not saying it isn’t easier, but you simply saying that him becoming a billionaire cause he comes
From a wealthy family is just insulting his hard work. When did I ever say it’s harder in any sort of way

I’ve seen him from the company wide live events he does and also in higher level small meetings. It is a very different personality, but I understand why.

He needs to show excitement, positivity, and appear friendly to a wide audience of people across many levels/roles.

He needs to be firm, opinionated, hold high level execs accountable, and have a strong leadership presence to have the respect of people that are far more experienced than he is.

Overall, I feel he does a good job with both given his own level of experience. He’s still learning, is very young, and has an immense amount of responsibility. He’s balancing his vision for the great culture while also trying to meet commitments to shareholders. Those two things are in constant conflict, and snap as managed it well under his leadership.

From a product vision perspective, I don’t feel he influences it to a meaningful level. But I think it’s alright he doesn’t, as it’s due to the scope of responsibility day-to-day he has. It’s not optimal for him to make low level decisions when we should be hiring the best teams of people in the world to make them.

I honestly couldn’t tell you. I’m sure like most leaders, they lose quite a bit of technical depth. But his background isn’t in computer science anyways, so he’s not naturally as technical anyways (from a software engineering perspective)

His background is in design, so the company can tend to be design led. I wouldn’t say he’s tremendously strong when it comes to tech.

He’s smart for sure. Culture is great. But hard work is expected. If you’re looking for another Microsoft or IBM this isn’t the place for you.

I just came from a company that I have been able to coast at - ready to make some moves. I know it’ll translate into the day-to-day.

Ready for that, but good to hear the guys got a real head on his shoulders.

Would you say that the entire leadership team is pretty solid across the board?

At the very top mostly yes. Good c-suite imo but mid level and first line managers can be a hit or miss
