As long as you are “physically present” in the US, the work needs to be authorized. You can always work outside the US remotely even for a US company, but not other way around. Key thing to note is “physical presence” requires work authorization no matter what kind of H visa or F visa you have.
Now some people might do this knowingly or unknowingly and don’t get caught. But that doesn’t mean it’s legal to do that here. Talk to an attorney if in doubt not the Blind lawyers who are literally debating on this.
