Obviously the market’s not there yet and we’re still in very early stages of the medium. But who do you think are the best VR/AR companies (small or large) for the following?:

• R&D
• Stability
• Risk-taking/pioneering
• Strong leadership
• Strong Design/Eng/Product collaboration
• Culture
• WLB
• TC

And if you can share if you’re in the VR/AR field or out of it, that’d be great too!

———

I’m in the field and here are my guesses:

• R&D: MSFT
• Stability: MSFT/Google
• Risk-taking: Apple
• Strong leadership: I used to think it was Oculus... maybe Apple?
• Design/eng/product: Google
• Culture: Google? But I have no idea what the culture on VR/AR teams are like in other companies...
• WLB: MSFT/Google
• TC: Apple

Oculus has the best people (especially considering their research background) in AR/VR. But its to be seen if any of that can be transformed into meaningful products.

What impact have the recent reorganization and changes in leadership had on Oculus projects and team culture?

Valve for VR. They developed the Rift (not Oculus) and they understand it’s limitations. Fb is trying to shoehorn VR into “social” and its kind of pathetic, their influence will ruin Oculus over time. Apple or MSFT for AR. Goog is just fast following vr ar trends, Clay doesn’t have a strong vision and they’ve restructured.

    • There are a lot of talented people in Cognition working on AR/VR. The biggest problem is our leadership lacks vision and follow through. Where are we with VR headsets a year after launching them? Why did we do them? How are the AR/VR groups at Apple? Any of them in Seattle?

Yes vision and follow through - as opposed to fast follow then forget - seem to be big challenges at Microsoft in general.

I can’t believe Phil spencer thought it was a good idea to cancel Xbox vr.

Isn't Apple generally mid tier at best when it comes to TC?

For AR/VR guys who are in demand, Apple’s TC will be very good. For generalist software guys, Apple’s TC can be (much) lower than FB & G. I have worked in AR/VR areas in a couple of companies.
