I've been seeing few interesting works being done in the reality labs for the past few months. I foresee that VR / AR (or metaverse) growing in the next decade, and that Meta is going to invest a lot of money in the Reality labs.
On the other hand, FAIR / Google Brain / DeepMind / OpenAI has been one of the most prestigious research labs for the past few years. I think AI is much more popular field and it will continue to grow.
I was wondering what you guys think about the future of each research directions would be like.
As a research scientist (or a software engineer), if you can join one of these labs, what would you join?
TC: 🥜 (student :p)
(I prefer the name FAIR over MAIR btw. They should rename it to Meta AI Department)

FB Reality Labs has been aggressively hiring general SWEs for their team but this is for AR/VR tech with has a different skill set compared to ML research.
My point is that I don’t think these areas can be compared due to the difference in academic experience and professional experience.
Both have a future but only one is feasible with a general CS degree but the other almost requires a Masters or PhD with relevant research experience.
If you ask me, i’d take Reality Labs any day because I know 1. I don’t have a masters (yet, doing one rn) 2. It’s FB lol, come back to me in 2-5 years and I’d say AI because that’s where my interests lie.
AI had its winter before deep learning era. I am worried whether if the “winter is coming” again
