Without phd, I recommend startups to get your foot in the door, then if you want you can more easily transition to FAANG ML/AI

In my experience I've seen almost no one move from ML infra to MLE. I'd recommend academic route or startup route. Also note that MLE is not all that great, theres a lot of hacky one off code you'll be dealing with from paper pushers. But some enjoy it

You said no one goes from ML infra to MLE, you mean within the same team/company?

For external hire, will ML infra background pigeonhole, cannot even get fang interview for MLE?

This PhD requirement is more of a formality and has absolutely nothing to do with the daily grind. But the requirements state this to sound elite.

Agreed. However even within research engineering groups, there’s this bias to listen to PhD engineers over non-phd. It’s dumb.

Yup, can't correct the world. It is more of an ego issue where the conscience of the person with the higher degree won't make him listen to a non-phd.

Masters is not that useful though unless you have strong publications
