What do all the immigrant and would-be immigrant folks here think of this? It seems like a sensible move to me.

I love these changes. They should be a bit more stringent if possible in the future. H1b is actually quite abused and many competent people haven't been able to get through. Keeps innovation out of this country and keeps mediocre workers in. Also great to see equally stringent changes for perm. I sincerely hope the h1b applications from shitty consultancies and IT chop shops take a nosedive next year.

How do you measure the competency? leetcode ?? What about this conducting a test once every six so that only those who clears the (subject ) test stays and any one who clears around the world come to can US ?? The things is it is selfishness to expect a law that favors you.

@cisco, Kindof agree that it is selfish of me to favor a law that's convenient for me. However, one way to measure competency is to look at who's in most demand and salaries are a rough indicator of that. It is very difficult to be objective in a way that satisfies everybody. In future if software engineers are required less than say doctors, the salaries would reflect that. It's not a great metric but it's some metric. Better than nothing. Also, this is how you start. It'll keep getting refined with time.

To answer the rhetorical side of your question, no, leetcode is not competency. But someone with a PhD from one of the best AI labs in the world is going to be much more valuable, in my opinion, than someone who fixes trivial UI bugs on a web page. Innovation is the key.

  • It's a good move. Will cut down on visa abuse. Many Indians stuck in GC backlog will get a GC sooner. A few others who fall below the benchmark will have to return. Seems fair enough.

Why do you think it is more stressful? From what I hear most people are working more and organizations are expecting more leading to higher productivity .

Companies donโ€™t pay less here! Middle vendors eat most of the lunch passes peanuts ๐Ÿฅœ to their H1B engineers.
Vendors are taking away the H1B quota from โ€œrealโ€ jobs.
Lot of folks stuck with OPT while waiting for the H1B lottery.

  • Keep in mind that the US govt can easily reduce outsourcing by changing the tax laws if needed. Or incentivizing companies to keep jobs here.

Expect something like this in case outsourcing increases.
