Is it even feasible to join facebook as a data scientist or engineer?

Jul 12, 2021 18 Comments

I heard that people fighting for the position are extremely competitive. Average folks wont even get a chance to interview.

After u join, u dont get to write a lot of code. Instead u strive to be an influencer - persuading others to solve problems in your proposed ways.

Any comment, facebook guys?

  • Facebook is full of average plebs. The only thing that you really need to do in order to get into Facebook is memorize Leetcode problem patterns, go through some mock interviews with friends and sit through Grokking the System design Interview. Maybe read Design of Data Intensive Applications so that you can pretend that you understand distributed systems (make sure to mention Paxos and Raft, even if in practice you have never developed anything more complex than a Leetcode exercise).
You are going to be interviewed by some guys with 3 YoE that have no clue about what they are doing. So use Python or Java and make sure to keep it simple while coding. Talk about complex stuff, write brain dead code.

And yeah, once you join Facebook you will be trying to push real work to others and spend as much time as possible working on BS made up things that can get you promoted.

Facebook has been basically intellectualy dead for the past 5 years.

Guys at Apple, Google and Microsoft complain about it, but at least there's real work going on there. Netflix may make you some money if you don't care about working with assholes.

If you want even more money, have low moral standards, a good CV and a worker bee attitude then try Jane Street; at least they are making some serious money.

If you have no morals at all and don't want to work hard then join a defense contractor. Still better money per hour than Facebook considering that you may not be working much more than 12 hours per week.

Finally, if you are too lazy to Leetcode, have no morals, a shit CV and can't get into defense then join JPMorgan. We will hire anybody as long as they are willing to show up at the office.

    • Yeah. San Francisco is another ball game. I would certainly consider doing the Leetcode dance for $450k / $500k a year. I'm certainly not going through the trouble to end up with a TC of £160k and a base salary lower than the one that I'm currently earning. If I ever get bored of doing almost nothing I may try my luck at a hedge fund.

    • DS is a complete crap shoot. These aren’t the smartest ppl around. They’re a group of arrogant, non-technical, stick-up-the-ass morons. The DS interview process is very non-technical and allows for a lot of bias. I’ve referred ppl from top schools, great companies, ppl who are smart as hell, who can’t get through the process. Yet the DS who make it through are Grade A automatons who can’t write a basic data pipeline to save their life, have zero personality and lack basic common sense when it comes to data (and mostly Chinese).

Go for DE where there is less bias and your skills can shine. Or choose Google.

    • After interviewing for many DS positions and failing miserably, this is refreshing to hear. Spend months preparing for technical rounds only for interviews to be exclusively behavioral or have them ask weird niche stats questions cherry picked from someone's a-hole or some strange esoteric data question that has no basis in reality b/c they just want to see how I would approach a hypothetical problem because they were too lazy to just come up with an analysis they want me to conduct with real data. I'm trying to make pragmatic decisions from data over here and use my technical skills to do so. Not engage in an ass kissing contest

I’ve interviewed for both a data engineer role and a software engineer role at FB and the software interview was much easier.
