Hi everyone,

I'm about to enter the offer phase for Google. I haven't given any numbers yet, and don't intend to. However my recruiter is pressuring me for expectations, but I don't know exactly what to say or how to navigate this. Any tips or methods I can use to get the fair and highest TC? It would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. #google #offer #totalcomp #negotation #swe #tech

My recruiter would not want to move if no expected number! You just give a high numbers. They ask number but never even come close to it. So be bold and firm. Also don’t be rush. They tend to be slow and exhaust your spirit. You would finally accept it because u r tired. (My lesson: the negotiation was last two months and the offer just moved up once)

The advice that I got was to give an uncomfortably high number. My recruiter refused to give me any guidance about reasonable ranges, so I got on levels.fyi to look at recent data. I was leveled at L4 and I'm not in the Bay Area, but I used L5 Bay Area salaries as that uncomfortably high number. My recruiter of course was then able to say we'd get closer to that number if I relocate, but I pressed on. Their initial offer was about 30K higher than other offers I'd gotten, but I was able to get another 20K beyond that.

Honestly, I picked a number that I liked that I also felt was a reach to get. I usually lowball myself so I wanted to pick a number that wouldn't be easy for them to say Ok to

Thanks for your responses. I'll take a look at the levels data for bay area and base it off of that. This position isn't in the bay, so that should allow for a high anchor. Any other tips?

    Which State?
In some (like California) they are required by law to give you salary range

They have given numbers but it's the very lowest numbers for a specific level, which are so low that it's concerning. I know the range goes way higher than that. So the numbers are generally helpful, but only for a floor level ideal

They can always go higher than their initial offer, so you can do at least one full round of negotiations. Your recruiter wants to close you and their used to shuffling numbers back and forth, so you're not going to get your offer yanked unless you're a total dick about it. there's a website called Candor that has a good script to use for negotiations
