I’m in the interview process at KPMG and a few other tech companies. Should I make the move to management consulting or stay in tech marketing?

My background: I have 5 years of tech marketing experience in enterprise IT and cybersecurity. I’m a technical digital marketer - managed $20m+ marketing budgets, SQL-proficient. I graduate with my MBA in April from a top tier and hoping to command more.

YOE: 5

Here’s my response. The feedback on this post shows exactly what is disgusting about this app. I simply shared my situation for support or insight instead I get bombarded with hate and discontent. Heres my story.

    - I have 5 years of full time experience. I have only worked at startups and agencies so I haven’t cracked the big companies yet (other than undergrad internships at Yelp and Viacom)
    - My salary is low now because I relocated from SF to Florida and took a 20% pay cut (I’m much happier here!)
    - I work full time (and couldn’t afford a full time top-tier) so although it’s not Harvard or Columbia, I decided on University of Florida. UF is the #5 online MBA program in the county, and #3 among publics: https://www.usnews.com/education/online-education/mba/rankings
    - I’ve interviewed for PMM and associate product roles at salesforce, Shopify, and Google. Nothing. I know my shit in marketing, but am looking to transition to product or consulting.
    - I jumped around a lot and have less experience than most my cohort so frankly I’m not shocked by the offers I’m getting. And yes, I network like crazy. Was referred at salesforce and Google.

    • Most replies to your post pointed out that the offers received are not in line with a top 3 MBA. How is that hate? Top 3 MBAs tend to get high offers from MBB or FAANG for product roles.
Top 3 online MBA or top within public schools or top in the area etc doesnt count unfortunately. Its a marketing tactic by the school. As pointed out above, unlike tech, with MBA its all about the brand. Anything outside a top 10 full time program will not get you big offers. Take the KPMG offer and use it as a launch pad to transition to tech

Good decisions come from experience, and experience comes from bad decisions. Good decision to post on blind, bad decision to whine. But now you can make better decisions.
Take the job, sunshine. Wish you the best in Florida.

What does “top tier” MBA mean? M7? Top 20?

  • Not being an ass but “top tier” MBA and KPMG don’t belong in the same sentence. You definitely can command more esp in this labor market, as others have already noted.

I reread this again. Top MBA, managed 20M+, how are you getting low balled? Are you timid on interviews? Why aren’t you networking with people from your top tier school?

      Right? Makes 0 sense.

    • Their top 3 MBA is not Wharton, but an online MBA from University of Florida, as clarified by OP in a comment down the thread.
