I’m in the interview process at KPMG and a few other tech companies. Should I make the move to management consulting or stay in tech marketing?
My background: I have 5 years of tech marketing experience in enterprise IT and cybersecurity. I’m a technical digital marketer - managed $20m+ marketing budgets, SQL-proficient. I graduate with my MBA in April from a top tier and hoping to command more.

- I have 5 years of full time experience. I have only worked at startups and agencies so I haven’t cracked the big companies yet (other than undergrad internships at Yelp and Viacom)
- My salary is low now because I relocated from SF to Florida and took a 20% pay cut (I’m much happier here!)
- I work full time (and couldn’t afford a full time top-tier) so although it’s not Harvard or Columbia, I decided on University of Florida. UF is the #5 online MBA program in the county, and #3 among publics: https://www.usnews.com/education/online-education/mba/rankings
- I’ve interviewed for PMM and associate product roles at salesforce, Shopify, and Google. Nothing. I know my shit in marketing, but am looking to transition to product or consulting.
- I jumped around a lot and have less experience than most my cohort so frankly I’m not shocked by the offers I’m getting. And yes, I network like crazy. Was referred at salesforce and Google.
Top 3 online MBA or top within public schools or top in the area etc doesnt count unfortunately. Its a marketing tactic by the school. As pointed out above, unlike tech, with MBA its all about the brand. Anything outside a top 10 full time program will not get you big offers. Take the KPMG offer and use it as a launch pad to transition to tech
Take the job, sunshine. Wish you the best in Florida.
Lmfao rofl.
Delusional people.
Do you still think KPMG doesn’t belong in the same sentence knowing that?
