With all these folks with high TCs, what’s the most frivolous spending you’ve ever seen?

Gonna try and be vague to not dox this guy but…

I have a friend who is close friends with a guy at FAANG, SWE2 with 4yoe ish, guess is he makes 300k-ish. I’ve met him a few times and he’s always dressed like he’s going clubbing (Rolex and designer clothes to go to Korean barbecue)

He’s single, no money from parents (at least from what my friend knows), but he rents a super nice house near the office in a desirable neighborhood (think Belmont, Hillsborough, etc) and at the moment he leases 3 cars over 120k each. One suv, one sport sedan, and one sports coupe, all the highest models except for the sports coupe.

He does not put money into his 401k because he claims his income is so high, that the 401k is just a waste of money because he’s gonna retire early… and yet I’m guessing 85% of his after tax income goes to the cars he leases and the rent he pays 🤦🏼‍♂️

It blows my mind that there are people like this, but then it got me thinking, he still saves some amount of money and I don’t think he’s in debt, there must be people worse off, so now I’m curious how much worse it can get. And maybe on the contrary, I’m curious of the stories of the most frugal people you’ve ever met, despite having high TC.
