Buying a a BMW 5 series (CPO) as a guilty pleasure

Aug 14, 2021 31 Comments

For the past few months, I have been fantasizing about buying a BMW 5 series (CPO). I love the look and rented it for a week and really enjoyed it. It would be a guilty pleasure and would give me an excuse to get out of the house more during WFH…and maybe motivate me to come into the office even.

A 2018 530i seems to be priced at around $35K and a 540i is around $40K at dealers near me. (Not sure how much flexibility there is in those prices.) I would ideally finance it at 0.9% or 1.9%. I will also most likely sell it after the one year CPO warranty expires.

What would be the best way to do this? Is this a bad idea? 😅

TC $230K, NW ~$400K (34, single)

I bought a bmw 5 series cpo previously. From experience, you are better off leasing a new one instead. The depreciation on these are so bad you lose about same amount buying and selling cpo vs leasing.

    • Eh we'll see. Depends on a lot though. My car stands out from most 4 series with m sport body and wheels. It's as high end as you can get without getting the m4. I'm basing my estimates also off my previous car, a 2012 Audi s4, with nearly 100k miles that I sold for 19k in early 2018. My current car was more expensive msrp and has less miles. May only get like 21-22k in a non inflated car market but definitely not lower than that. I always sell private though. Dealerships extort you. If you have a car that stands out from the crowd finding a private buyer to grab it for a good price isn't hard. The guy who bought my Audi even flew from several states away to pick it up.

I get that not everyone wants all that hassle though so I think buying vs leasing kind of comes down to if you're a more DIY person or not.

You got lucky the new G generation BMWs are so ugly that people are still buying the F series lol. Buying a non-M BMW is such a waste

Do what makes you happy. You aren't gonna be like I wish I had 50K more when you are 70.

  • Honestly you realize the car won’t really help. I owned 2 beautiful 1of1 Range Rover Autobiography and it’s just money pits. Rotors, pads just the wear and tear items are expensive. Now i just uber much cheaper 🤣
