Hi Blind. About me: mid 20s, single, no plan for kids in the next 5 years and trying to optimize TC/career growth. I had no financial cushion right out of college but I have some decent amount saved up now. Also learned investing along the way and really want to make the most financially out of my 20s for the inevitable cost coming in next stage of life (taking care of my parents, maybe starting a family, and/or starting a company, etc). I would describe myself as someone who enjoys taking moderate amount of calculated risk. I have read a few success stories on Blind where people quit their jobs and managed to get a sizeable bump on their TC, and I am currently becoming increasingly invested in the same idea. I have been working pretty hard in my current company and getting good feedback, even promised a promotion next month, but I don't think my company is willing to pay the target I want, even for top performers. Right now as much as I want to stay motivated, I can't study during workdays or weekends, as I get distracted by work (which I love tbh) and have this annoying subconscious complacency I can't get rid of. I tried self imposing deadlines a while back, but haven't been making good progress since. My plan now is to confirm that my company would not be able to pay the target I have in mind, then stay long enough to collect my soon vesting RSU's and gtfo. Primarily aiming for G and FB, though will cast my net wide. Planning on enjoying life for a bit, reading a few technical books, learning and practicing LC concepts essentially following this person's technique (in comments) over 6 months to a year (https://www.teamblind.com/post/help-with-choosing-the-company-zSW5R0ge). If somehow I don't make it in a year, I would likely need to dip into my taxable stock account (which I really don't want). I especially want the time constraint to be a motivating factor, as I seem to work better with my ass on fire, hence the plan of quitting, instead of just studying during off hours and over weekends. I'm not currently held back from the potential stigma of having some gap time on resume, as from what I think and read on Blind, recruiters are understanding but more importantly, they have incentive to close good performers, not people with flawless histories. Needlessly to say I wouldn't reach this point in life without luck and hard work, and I feel obligated and responsible to keep pushing my career forward for my future self and family, and prepare financially for what's to come in life. Is there anything I'm missing from my plan above for my current situation? Assuming I work at a steady rate, is this a realistic plan? What are some other aspects I overlooked and should consider before pulling the trigger? Looking for anecdotes, ideas and perspectives. Thanks for sharing. Most software engineers make less than 160k. If you do this and you are already pretty good with computers and are exceptionally motivated and get top tier entry level software engineering position. You’ll make about the same as you are making now. So I wouldn’t recommend based on current data.
He’s shooting for FB/G bruh Y’all’s STARTING salaries start at 183K... making the same my ass
Google man is trying to cut down on the competition
lc for 2 month full time, get into faang or other top bay area companies and start making 250k+
I'd say prep while still at work. Cut back on going ham at work so you can prep. I also have a similar plan and am currently prepping everyday (been around 6 months so far) and keep planning to prep until I hit 1 yoe then interview.
If you focus more on prep then likelihood of getting into dev list increases at Amazon 😀
I've been finishing all my tasks early so should be fine. I don't sacrifice my work to prep, i'm just suggesting it for OP since they say that's why they cant prep with their job.
Same situation here. For sure that in the worst case you can find a similar job with the same TC within one year, so you don't need to use taxable stock account. Also check if your company has some boomerang rule, like if you get back within 6 months, you don't have to go through the interviews again
Boomerang rule!! Never heard about this!! Does any of the FAANG has it?
You didn’t mention what is your major/background. If you are a CS person you could study 1 or 2 hrs a day and be ready in reasonable time without quitting your job
I took some time off and it worked for me.
Thanks for the input. Would you like to share your situation at the time and what prompted you to pull the trigger?
