Do you think one has a fair chance to be successful as Asian male immigrant in US?

By success I mean making non-trivial amount of money, enough to allow you to buy house at palo alto with cash and not worry about it :-)

By success I also mean being well connected to other high value individuals who can help and respect each other.

Also it means stepping up in the socio-economic letter so that one does not have to assume to receive the short end of the stick in all aspects of social sitation.

That being said, as an Asian male immigrant so far in US for near 10 years, my perspective on the American dream has been inly dwindling.

Largely because, once I leave the relatively safe bubble of corporate G (after all we all passed behavioral round), people (American, White, or both) refuse to see positive potential in me, even with the track record of professional career and PhD educational background.

One worth mentioning anecdotal memory was when a janitor in my graduate school scolded me for sitting on the desk. This type of social bashing would never been experienced before I came to US. I do not forget being threatened in elevator and hallway of ivory tower. F the civility.

I forgot how many times I went to cafeteria and the server skipped taking order from me. The fellow American guys joyfully call this white dominant college town "perfect" place in the earth. When they blame locals in Asian cities rude, I can not avoid thinking about race and at the same time I was convinced that they do not have fair respect for me as a person. I was the polite guy but people did not act the same way back to me.

The reason I particularly mention male is generally the US social institution put asian female on top of asian male, this is implictly followed rule, thus myself being asian male in US does not work in my particulat favor.

Given that the Asian male immigrants are automotically tossed to the low echelon the society, I generally lost hope that my expectation of success is not obtainable in US, not even in silicon valley.

It was sad to see how other international students of white ethnicity were well approached by US people, while I was standing nearby completely ignored. When US people approaches me there is always some interest in their favor in volved. Oh well I suddenly feel popular as my linkedin mail box is bombarded by the recruiter who mostly have liberal arts degrees. They want me to ditch my hard earned position here to join their next gen start up. See who is the founder? Allas its these American youngsters with zero industry experience.

As OP highlighted, even if you have more money, are more successful, like a grad student, even a "lower" class white person like the janitor will feel entitled enough to try to assert some sort of authority over you. You may try to treat the janitor as an equal, but he will due to his white pride and fragility, try to pull you under him.

      > I'm just emphasizing that even though immigrants are very humble and see everyone as an equal, whites see a colonial racial structure.

      Got any proof for that?

I do not think name calling is the only thing in this thread. I am describing how the social norm is structured against favor of Asians.

Thank you for elaborating it so well. I can feel you. To me, US is great when it has enough vacant lands when you need privacy and comfort zone bubbles. But it is not so great when, as a (so called “model”) minority, this land is too vacant to stand in the center, to be seen and included, without ignorance, bias and glass ceilings.

My only gain from this experience is, I finally can relate to, or at least have a standing to imagine empathically, what do those minority races in my home country really feel. I used to romanticize their situation a lot. I thought being a minority with an unique background, language and culture, looks so cool. Until I landed America.

Stop whining, this post is cringe worthy hot garage.

Asian here, grew up in predominantly white America, did well throughout life and never felt that most people will treat me unfairly. Are there those who are racist? Sure, but not enough to prevent you from achieving success.

I will say that there is institutional discrimination against Asians the last decade in college admissions, etc. And that's something worth fighting for, but whining aimlessly like this is garbage behavior.

    • Also an Asian American here, can we please support our fellow Asians? I get the personal responsibility in learning to break through our limitations. But a rewarding aspect of this is helping other Asians see the world the way you do and not accosting them for feeling the way they do now.

Welcome to the reality of white America. This is not a land for non white people. Even if you gain citizenship, you will always be forced to serve the white people with money here.

This is BS. especially if you are in Silicon Valley and tech space.
    It’s all in the mindset.
It’s better to be an Indian or Asian if you want to dominate tech industry/ startups.
There are only so many whites who can actually scale up a startup and it would eventually be Asians/ Indians who have to scale up and bring it to success
I have seen a lot of whites respect Indians in SV

OP, the way you put it makes it hard for other to respect you when you do not respect others.

Thr problem js people regard "asian" a social tag that they can choose to be related or not depending on what is on thr stake. For instance Indians call themselves Asian when intitution makes a gesgure to advocate minority but when it comes to them having to give support to non-Asian group, they are normally like, "oh Indians have hardships thus I would not help ASIANS"
