I am new to the platform and I see a lot of good contact here. I look forward to the feedback on this post. I am over a decade into my career in several industries. Public sector, military, and private tech sector.

After looking through some of the posts here I see that a lot of professionals are securing really great compensation packages with a decent amount of years in.

My trouble here is after spending the time that I have with 12 years of experience, I feel as if I may be able to demand a much higher compensation package than I currently receive.

I live in Northern Virginia and I work in the public sector. I am open to changing industries, sectors and locations if it is the most logical decision.

YoE: 12
Sector: Public: Defense & Security
Current Role: Product Owner
TC: $110K w/ Medical Dental and Generous PTO; Remote Work Capable.
No Undergrad Degree; Have Associates Degree
No Coding Languages

Any advice here? I’ve created my profile for Talent by Blind. Open to changing careers to find a company that values my experience and skillset. #tech #advice #compensation #careerchange

  • You’re probably not going to get too many responses based on the industry. It may or may not be obvious to you yet, but if you want the huge salaries you see here you’d most likely need to get out of defense and into commercial tech.

You might get more responses for those type of salaries with more description on ‘product owner’

Can you get (or do you already have) a security clearance)? If yes, we are always looked for cleared/clearable folks. Tech or non-tech, there are a bunch of positions in the DC area.

This may sound like a copout answer, but unfortunately it really depends on your interview.

You can probably guess from the level of responsibility you've had what you could get. Some people at 12 YOE are VP equivalents and could get that in tech. Others may be counted as just experienced hires, one or two levels above new grads. At top companies, both are paid well, but the difference could be between 250-300k vs 500-600k. And there's also the question on whether you could get into those top companies at all, or even if you could, whether you might make more going into a lower tier company at a higher level.

Tl;Dr, YOE alone really doesn't tell us much, even if you tell us what field it's in. But at the minimum, if you can get into a top company, you can make at least double your comp.

Have any luck? I am in a similar boat, trying to break into the private sector. I find that our positions in the Fed don’t necessarily directly translate to private sector jobs, especially if you’re management or project management. It’s makes it tricky to find the right spot. I’ve had interviews with FAANG but ultimately haven’t made it mostly because of that disconnect.
