What a bold gesture, we all know that tech industry is plagued by such assholes who keeps getting promoted even after this.
Hopefully more women will get strength and can come out with their stories of harassment in tech.

This is where she shared some experience at AWS: https://animakumar.wpcomstaging.com/2019/11/08/metoo-the-story-that-never-ends/

BTW, who is the guy, likely from academia, who she referred to? From the twitter post she accused him getting promoted to VP. I know Alex Smola (CMU) holding DE/VP position in Amazon Bay Area office, I hope he is not the guy she referred.

Agreed! But we see more such harassments happening in industry than in academia, I guess. Of course it’s the fact that the sample size is probably 2 orders of magnitude or above in industries, so % wise it could be similar.

    • Heh. Happens in academia routinely. Often the targets are students and research assistants. We had a specimen like this in my department, one year 15(!) people filed similar complaints against him. Collectively. I was one of those people The department head threatened the international students “would be sad if your grant was pulled”. I later found out this guy had a special filing cabinet dedicated to all the complaints that both women and men who witnessed the harassment had filed against him. This was 15 years ago. He’s still there

I've passed FAANG interviews and worked at a major tech companies. I'm happy to help coach people switch jobs or get promos, for a fee. Fwiw, I'm good at it.

I've had the opposite experience. I'm a cisgender male and my best boss has been a female.

My current boss is female, and she's up there with the best. Great boss. But yeah, my worst was also female.

This happens all the time... the worst is if you speak out about it you are shunned from Silicon Valley. As horrible as it is it’s better to keep quiet and just move teams or jobs. Speaking out about it means it will be harder to move on

  • This is from last year. I'm surprised it wasn't picked up widely.
Hope she gets better managers and peers in her future jobs
