Switch to interesting team at Microsoft or take Google offer

Apr 21 21 Comments

I'm interviewing internally with a team I'm interested in at Microsoft. It's where I want my career to go, and I'm excited about it. I also have an offer from Google for a team I'm not interested in at all. Would it be stupid to reject Google?

IMO google has nothing to do with it. It’s that you’re turning down a 50k bump. Unless the hcol erases the difference.

For me, I would go for Microsoft. Before taking Google I thought Google was the best place to work compared to Microsoft, but after joining Google, I regret it. Super bureaucratic, cheap af, awful toxic team. Always go for a team you know you would love to work on. If both teams in both companies are great equally, then go for prestige.

Comp and perks aside, it always pays in the long run to have seen how different big tech players operate - their culture, their stack, people etc.

  • if you stay in Microsoft, the pay will keep decreasing due to next-to-nothing refreshers.
At google, you’ll keep growing your TC. And, you could easily leave after 2-3 years or maybe come back to MS with higher level which wouldn’t be difficult internally.
