Could Amazon be worth it early career?

Jan 28 17 Comments

Sounds like the bar is on the floor for getting hired at Amazon rn. I know it has shit rep here and elsewhere, toxic work culture, PIP dangers, etc.

But for an engineer stuck in corporate IT the pay boost + FAANG name sounds really appealing. I can put up with a shit environment if it’s good for my career. Don’t feel like I have the ability to cut it in interviews with other FAANGs.

Try after 2+ yoe for SDE2 300k offer.

Promos in Amazon are general pretty painful.

    • The bar is low because their shit practices have tarnished their reputation over time. It’s difficult for that to turn around in the next year, it would require a huge event that triggers a culture shift (I.e if jassy stepped down and they hired Larry page as CEO). Not going to happen.

I know a lot of people are still leaving in droves, somebody’s gonna have to fill those seats

  • Amazon isn’t a bad idea but it might be worth it to just study for a few months and get another FAANG. The YOE isn’t going to go very far at any of them. There are people on here with 15+ Yoe and Google recruiters have them targeting an L4

I’ve been in AWS for 1.5yrs now between 2 teams.
I have personally not seen any of the bad culture they mention on blind.
Operational burden is high, but you do end up learning a LOT!
I would recommend for early career.

    • @Northrop None of these arguments hold up because you can apply that logic to literally every company, but the data (thousands of reviews across Blind and Glassdoor) clearly shows that Amazon is a bad place to work on average

    • Yeah, maybe. I don't know, I never worked at Amazon. I just compared it with similar sentiment in defense. But I have friends who work at Amazon, and it's 50/50. Some hated it, some liked it.

  • If you are single going to Amazon for 1-2 years if you have nothing else will definitely help your career and make you learn a lot.

Just make sure you don't spread the toxic WLB and culture to your next job
