Google L5 vs Meta E5

Have two offers at Meta and Google. And need to pick my next home. Both are based in NY area.

Google:
Base: $214K
Equity: 635K (33, 33, 22, 12)
Sign-on: $80K
Anual Bonus: 15%
Y1 TC: $536K

Meta:
Base: $214K
Equity: $875K
Sign-on: $100K
Anual Bonus: 15%
Y1 TC: $565K

The downside to the Google job is that the team match is less interesting for me than some of the meta teams that are hiring. Google also is remote which is something I do not want after COVID. I’m a people person. 😜

Meta downside is the lack of WLB, deliver results obsessed culture (maybe too much). A bit of a PIP factory according to Blind.

For those at G and M please tell me how much of a negative these are.

I’m looking for something fun and exciting to work on. But I also want some balance in life. (I’m not a workaholic, but enjoy working hard and playing hard).

Currently:
Salesforce SMTS
TC: $250K
YOE: 8

I get that, and had the same reservations, but I didn’t care. If they think I’m a weak eng because I don’t want to work 60 hours a week, sounds like I just dodged a bullet. Asking how much someone works should have nothing to do with eng skill. The most common response was you can get MA working 40, the ones trying for higher rating work more, but that’s not expected of anyone else and I have observed that to be true

If I were in this position I think I’d take meta just for the TC difference. Comparing just first year TC kind of hides the larger Meta grant as well as Meta’s substantially larger yearly refreshers.

It is very difficult to get promoted to L6 internally at Google. You’re probably looking at 3-4 years if you’re a top performer and potentially never otherwise. Not sure if that makes a difference. Google’s culture is also very perf oriented, but focused more on leadership and complexity - especially for L5 - than just Meta’s focus on impact.

    TC: L5 490k with a cliff to 390k in a year 😔

Big TC difference due to front load plus better M refreshers. Also you don’t like the g team as much and you don’t want to be remote. Sounds like you should listen to Blind and go to google 🤪

    • I’m personally leaning towards M, just wanted to demonstrate Blinds obsession with the Google.

Yea I hate G but I wouldn’t go with Meta. I left and have regretted not selling my meta stock, I’ll say this. People are telling me the stock isn’t going to do well based on usage and the drop in advertising spending. You’re TC will go down. Go with G until you can plan an L6 role at Meta in 1 year.

  • Google hands down. Google doesn’t pip engineers ever. Also both of your offers are valid for a year, so feel free to try and exit.
