Hi Team Blind!

I am mechanical engineer. After my bachelor's, I worked as a project operations manager for almost 2 years and came to pursue my Master's with directed studies related to energy sector. I joined a company as a full-time process engineer (officially a co-op) and finally didn't offer me a job as they don't wanna sponsor H1-B. Received 3 offers just before the Pandemic Outbreak and all were rescinded. We never know what happens at any moment. I just don't wanna sit idle and I started working on data analytics and ML. After my OPT, I had to find a job as I have to keep my status alive and myself as well. So, joined as an Product Manager(officially an Intern) at a small company, and worked on software product development. Now, I started working for a software start-up working on a Govt. client, automating their processes. I'm not only a BA, but also a programmer and tester. Life has brought me to do different things. I don't know where it goes and how I end up.

I had interviews with some of the FAANG companies where I was defeated by much experienced candidates but not the lack of knowledge (as per the feedback). What should I do now? I keep applying for Project/Program/Product/Operations management roles. But nothing comes my way. Any suggestions on how I should proceed would help. If anyone(teams) has open roles, and looking for someone who would be able to adapt to the environment quickly with a ton of passion, please let me know.

I appreciate your help!

YOE: 3

Thanks!

Hey, sorry I didn't get back. 2 YOE is actually good. If FANG is not responding to your application, find roles in startups or other places as a PM. That should help you eventually transition to FANG as a PM.

I am actually a mechanical engineering trying to be a PM. Right now due to covid, hiring is slightly down but should ramp up next year.

Also, make sure you have a strong resume that communicates your impact, leadership qualities, focus on customer, navigating ambiguity etc when applying to Google. See you on the other side!

  • In the early years work in a job that gives you hard skills. Not product/project management. Go for a programming role.
