I had a really fantastic year at AWS. Joined as an L6 PMT-ES. Wrote 2 PRFAQs from scratch and launched 2 big products (launched at re:Invent) and a few iterative features as well.

I am now feeling that I won’t be able to grow more next year. Too early for promo to L7. This makes me want to look for roles outside and explore a different product path. Does anyone have recommendations or want to chat?

  • 1) grow the pie
    2) make noise

If you can’t do #1 or if #2 is ineffective then find a place where you can do both.

Grow the pie = expand your user base by making your product attractive to an adjacent market. Sometimes achievable via partnerships too.

Make Noise= Tell people what you’re going to do and why. Repeat it frequently over the course of doing it. Tell everyone (in metrics) what it did for the top/ bottom line when done.

Growing the product you launched is a skill set too. Learn that. It's hard in AWS with useless marketing teams

Simple. Scaling a product is one of the hardest problem for a PM. You have to fight against inertia, Entropy and ensure that your product continues to get new features, has sales motion to attract customers by vertical.

Launching is not even 10% hard as building a business out of your product.

I agree with Miir. We will also have to look beyond product marketing … enthusiastic partners, developers, Trainers or evangelizing yourself …

I left Amazon before my L7 promo. Biggest regret. Stay there, get to L7, then look for another challenge if you want to. Grow your skillset in the meantime...

    • @kfigo (Google)... What is your TC at Google L5 that the Amazon L7 TC couldn't match? I am surprised that the chasm is so wide... Was it due to stock appreciation in 2021? When did you join Google?

I joined aug 2021. I was non tech l7 so tc was $280k, moved to tpm l5 tc is now $350k, close to $380k with appreciation

Amazon also didn’t give me a bump with l7 promo claiming I was already bottom of band since my stock increased.

Already got a small raise at G, just some of the differences

  • WTF is this new "es" appendix on PM-T (which already has a bullshit -T appendix to it that isn't real at all; OP even said they're from business school 🤣).

SDM makes more at Amazon than PMT and it's not close.

Amazon PMs do get overleveled coming out of b school and it's well known. But they're still paid peanuts 🥜

      Both of these are true.

And wtf I don't understand all the emotion in this thread lol
