Google compensation package for SWE IC L6

Yesterday 25 Comments

Hi. My technical interview for a SWE L6 position at Goggle went well. The recruiter is asking me to share my expected compensation and she just wants s number before the compensation committee looks at my case next week.
My 2021 TC at my current job was $634k. I currently have ~900k unvested RSUs.

Would it make sense for me to ask for $700k TC?

I have got a PhD with 20+ years of experience.

Wow people here are so out of touch. There are TC bands for each level. You are never going to get 1M as L6. You need to get to L7 or L8 to get that kind of comp.

    • @DsVW55 I was with you until you called OP dumb for interviewing L6.

You do realize that most people don’t reach L6 level comp ever in their lives right? And L5 is considered a terminal level? Blind is truly out of touch with reality for bringing this kind of reaction out of users like you.

      I was rephrasing Netflix.

JimKerrig isn’t out of touch because no one with 20+ yoe automatically gets 1M TC.

You get paid what you interviewed for.

Top of the band for L6 is around 700k (first year): 240k base, 20% bonus, 1.2M equity front loaded + sign on. You can ask for more (like 750/800k) and see what they say.

For my previous job change, I simply stated that I am really excited about the opportunity and I expect the compensation to be competitive with the market. If the recruiter pushes further, it may even be ok to say that they know the market better than you do. It seems like the conventional wisdom is to not state a number first! What if their budget is bigger than your current TC? They are obviously aware of what people are making based on the same sources of information you have - levels, Glassdoor, blind ...

I got a 25% bump from πŸ₯œπŸ₯œto πŸ₯œπŸ₯œπŸ₯œ + monopoly πŸ₯œπŸ₯œ being in HW - your numbers are in the stratosphere to begin with so who knows! I don't understand why SWEs are paid so much!!

  • You should ask for L7 and 900k comp. Is that doable ?

    • To be clear, L6 is just my best guess. I didn’t proactively apply to L6. The hiring manager approached me with a role.
The had me apply to a L6 SWE req. but they said that was simply for formality and details of it didn’t matter.
The recruiter said the actual level should be decided within the next week as a result of the β€˜leadership review’.
It might as well be L7.

    • I also know that everyone reporting to that manager are L6

  • 700K is the least you should expect. You can easily ask for something around 800K given your current TC and unvested RSUs.
