Got an offer for a series c fintech company in bay area (Unicorn )

280k base
540k of equity over 4 years

This would be a TC of 415k.

This role is managers of managers over 30+ person org.

This seems very low. L7 at Amazon now and I make 700k. I know L6 sdms that make more then this ( and the equity here is liquid).

Bay area homies, is the pay really This bad?

TC 700k

How much is the company valued at?

Your startup TC is just the base. If you want to add equity in, you should really think about it with growth of valuation in mind

And if you don’t believe the growth, don’t take the offer

      OP
While I like the growth prospects, I don't feel like I'm getting compensation for the risk. They are gearing up for series D and don't have any liquidity events planned in next 3 years.

OP offer the company a $300K investment and go somewhere with a better ROI for your time.

Also consider if they’re paying you this much that when you have to build your team the offers you will make will be outcompeted by most companies.

Director of eng should get at least 0.1% at Series C, so at least 2X if not 3X what they’re offering you: https://topstartups.io/startup-salary-equity-database/

How does it feel if one has 0.13 percent stake for a 800m valuation , and potential exit at 3B .

      Will it make u rich

  • It is usually better to invest in a startup than work for one, though there are exceptions. That base is about as high as you will usually see at a startup, even for c-suite positions. As Netflix said above, you can just buy the equity they are offering.

Base is high, but if they blended in the bonus, then normal. Equity is a bit low, but also acceptable.
