My H1B was picked in the lottery and the status was changed to RFE a few days ago. I have a PhD in chemistry and now work as a software engineer. So I guess the RFE will be about how my degree is related to my job? Anyone successfully defend this kind of RFE?

Edit: no trolling please

Job prospects in my particular specialty are grim because it’s related to defense and I need clearance for a lot of jobs. Also, the type of work that I can find is not intellectually stimulating. Didn’t think about this much when I joined PhD.

I had a friend who’s h1b got rejected after a similar situation. But when the lawyers appealed, they added much more useful information to the docs submitted. Just contact your lawyers and be in sync with them and tell them you want to provide additional information for your case to show how your other experience is relevant and ask what all docs you can look for

  • OP's last message should be entered into h1b policies, guidelines etc. SW field can have people from so many backgrounds that it is almost meaningless to issue RFE.
